Some Things I Did Today

Summer's almost over.

Today, for the first time in three months, it rained for a good long while. It was actually cold! Seeing as we suffered 37.7 - 40 C temperatures from April to May, this was most certainly a welcome change.

The editorial team huddled in our building past 7:30 p.m., waiting for the storm to pass. Lights flickered on and off, computer monitors came to life of their volition. Between flashes of lightning and loud, sporadic crashes of thunder, our second-in-command officer, Ate Nels, a 55-year-old former journalist who likes to wear button-down blouses with seventies' flower prints on them, cowered in fear under her desk. She was covering her ears with her hands. "When I was in college here in U.P., I saw a lightning bolt split a very large, very old tree in half," she shares, "what was worse was the sound it made. I can't describe it: the most I can say about it is, it was like what your body would scream, inside, if it were dying."

Before this, my buddy V. insisted I eat lunch with him at that deceptively decrepit hole-in- the-wall (or street) along Katipunan Extension, Thai Restaurant. What the place lacked in aesthetic beauty, it more than made up for with its incredible food! For those who love all things genuinely Thai, try their excellent Tom Yang soup and their scorchingly spicy Chicken Curry, both very cheaply priced at 65 pesos (with rice). Thanks V.!

Also, I'm running a 5 K marathon this Saturday. I've already got a running partner, but the more the merrier! Does anybody else want to join me? It's actually not that far: think of it as the distance from Ever Gotesco Commonwealth to U.P. Diliman campus, or from Tomas Morato to Quezon Circle. At my peak physical condition, it takes me, all 190 pounds of me, 45 minutes to walk/run that. Besides, it'll be a great opportunity to take part in a team competition, and a chance to finally be able to boast to people - "why yes, I've run a 5 K race." Come on, it'll be fun!

And on that note, I'm off to read more of Mark Haddon's the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime.
